Saturday 24 – Sunday 25 October
Duration: 10am - 4pm (both days)
A two-day deep dive into clay, landscape, and experimentation with visiting tutor Hamish Jackson.
In this workshop we’ll explore the clays and raw materials found around West Berkshire, learning how to dig, process and transform them into something you can actually make pots and glazes from. It’s part field trip, part science lab, part muddy creative adventure.
We’ll head out together to collect local materials, then bring everything back to the studio to process, test and experiment. Alongside making, Hamish will introduce ideas around clay formation, recognising useful materials in the landscape, and an accessible entry into glaze chemistry.
By the end of the weekend you’ll have created a series of clay and glaze tests using what you’ve gathered, all fired in the studio and ready to review at a later date. No experience needed, just curiosity and a willingness to get messy.
All materials, tools and firing included.
What to expect:
A friendly two-day workshop in the studio with a field trip outdoors
Collecting and identifying local clays and materials
Processing rocks and other raw materials into usable clay and glaze tests
An introduction to clay formation and glaze chemistry
Hands-on experimentation with clay bodies, slips and glaze tests
All tools, materials and firing included
Your finished tests fired in the studio after the workshop
